Ultraviolet Water Purification

How does ultraviolet water purification work? UV water purification occurs when water is passed through a tube and over an ultraviolet light source that is protected by a transparent sleeve. The wavelengths of the UV rays are capable of altering the DNA of such organisms as bacteria, viruses, mold, protozoa, algae, and fungi. The water is therefore purified, as the organisms are now incapable of reproducing and/or causing disease. Purification results are based on the light intensity and the length of time that the water is exposed to such a treatment. Maintenance is primarily limited to a regularly scheduled replacement of the ultraviolet bulb.

What options do I have when purchasing an ultraviolet water filtration system?

UV water treatment systems can be installed in one of two ways. A system that is installed to treat the water for the entire home is considered to be a "point of entry" purification treatment method. A "point of use" UV water purifier is attached to a single faucet. Such systems can be mounted either directly on the counter or under the counter of the water faucet that is being treated.

UV water treatment lights also vary in their intensity and associated effectiveness at "de-activating" pathogens. Based on the specific water purification needs, some UV systems are coupled with additional filtering or treatment methods such as a carbon pre-filter.

Are there any risks associated with using UV water filters?

There are no harmful residual radiation effects on water that has been treated with UV light. Organisms that are potentially ingested have been rendered unable to replicate and/or killed by the UV treatment that they have undergone. Simply stated, the ultraviolet filtering process is a non-chemical, environmentally safe approach to purifying your water supply.
